PCD vs carbide tooling: when does diamond pay off?

PCD (polycrystalline diamond) tooling can last far longer than carbide — but only in the right conditions. Reaching for it on the wrong job wastes money. Here’s how to tell them apart.

Where PCD wins

PCD holds its edge in abrasive, non-ferrous materials — aluminium and high-silicon alloys, composites, some non-metals — especially at high production volumes, where far fewer tool changes lower cost per part and improve consistency.

Where carbide is the right call

PCD is not for steel or other ferrous materials (it reacts with iron at cutting temperatures) and carries a higher upfront cost. For lower volumes, mixed work, or ferrous materials, carbide is usually the more economical, sensible choice.

The cost-per-part maths

The question isn’t “which is better” — it’s “which is cheaper per part for this job.” At volume in abrasive non-ferrous alloys, PCD’s tool life usually wins. Below that threshold, carbide does.
