What is deep-hole drilling?
Deep-hole drilling produces holes with a high depth-to-diameter ratio while maintaining tight straightness and surface quality. Two main methods cover the range:
- Gundrilling — a single-flute tool fed with high-pressure coolant, ideal for smaller-to-medium diameters and very high precision and finish.
- BTA / STS drilling — a larger-diameter system with high material-removal rates, used where gundrilling would be too slow.
